Gender/Pregnancy Discrimination

Milford, Connecticut, Lawyers Handling Claims of Gender or Pregnancy Discrimination

In a work environment, everyone deserves to be treated with both fairness and equality. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In some places of business, employers treat workers differently based solely on their gender.

Under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee on the basis of their gender. This includes any discriminatory actions in:

  • Hiring, layoffs or termination
  • Promotion or demotion
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Job assignments and training

When envisioning gender discrimination, most people think of men not allowing women to advance. While this may be true in many situations, the reality is that both the perpetrators and the victims of gender discrimination can be either men or women.

No matter who is the subject of gender discrimination — it is wrong and it is illegal. If you feel that you have been mistreated based on your gender, you may have the right to pursue legal action against your employer.

A Representative Case

A recent client was the only female salesperson at a car dealership and had been let go as part of a "restructuring" under new management. Following her termination, her position was re-filled by a man. We were able to secure a sizeable settlement after trial had already begun.*

Pregnancy Discrimination

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act, an amendment to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibits discriminatory employment practices toward pregnant women. In addition to barring discrimination in the hiring, firing, promotion, training or amount of compensation awarded, the act requires employers to treat pregnant employees the same as non-pregnant employees in terms of both leave benefits and special accommodations.

If an employer refuses to make these accommodations, extend similar benefits or releases the woman from employment, they have broken the law.
